How to properly serve sushi?

In Japanese cuisine, the preparation, consumption of food, and table setting are deeply rooted traditions that emphasize the importance of considering and arranging all elements with care.

For European culture, Japanese ceremonies seem complicated, although they are based on simplicity and moderation. Decorate the table beautifully, so that before the start of the meal you want to admire the pattern of the arrangement of dishes and utensils, the shapes of the dishes and the combinations of sushi colors.

If you have mastered the rules of etiquette and the ability to eat sushi correctly, you will easily cope with the serving. A varied menu for a feast is suggested by the recipes for cooking Asian dishes on our website.

For a more authentic presentation, it is helpful to use wooden or bamboo plates, which are preferred by the Japanese. You don’t necessarily need a complete set; even a few dishes on the table will create an “Asian” ambiance.

If you’re hosting a picnic, consider using a handy Asian lifehack – provide guests with warm, moist towels for hand cleansing, as they do in restaurants. At home, it is more convenient to replace them with hand washing using tap water.

Ensure there is ample free space on the table to view the food from different angles. Each participant should have a generous area assigned to them, and arrange the utensils in a sequence corresponding to the order in which the dishes will be served to your guests.

Serve the entire prepared menu at once, presented on large trays. Arrange the dishes in a way that allows each person to reach them comfortably. It is not customary to share communal dishes.

Use the tips for choosing tableware, they will add exciting energy to your table.

  • Maintain an odd number of everything—plates, sushi pieces, utensils—whether it be three, five, or seven. Each dish should have its own separate plate. If you also serve noodles or soup alongside sushi, serve them with covered lids so that guests can savor the aroma when they are opened.
  • Opt for plain dishes without patterns—black, white, or red—so that your guests or family members are not distracted from enjoying the flavors. Experiment with combining colors and shapes of dishes; for example, place a red square saucepan on a round black plate, or vice versa, pair a round white bowl with a red square plate.
  • When it comes to wooden chopsticks, place them on a hashioki or hashi stand, with the thin ends facing left. If you don’t have a stand, any eye-catching holder will suffice. You can also lay the chopsticks on a plate or beside it on the table, but remember the proper direction.

Adding a unique presentation of sushi and rolls for your loved ones will bring delightful variety to the dinner atmosphere and provide a topic for table conversation. Enjoy your feast!
