Differences between sushi and rolls

Despite the fact that sushi and rolls have already become a significant part of world cuisine and are amazingly popular, many connoisseurs of Japanese delicacies continue to persistently confuse their names.⠀

We suggest dotting all the dots above the “i” and figuring out how sushi differs from rolls.

First of all, it is important to note that these dishes are not that different. For example, in their preparation there is the use of rice with a high content of gluten and gluten, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, salt and various seafood. Wasabi and pickled ginger are usually served as a side dish – this tradition was started in ancient Japan.

However, the methods of preparation and serving, the external shape and composition of rolls and sushi are somewhat different. So, what is the difference between sushi and rolls?

Differences in form

The very word “rolls” (from the English term “to roll” – to wrap) alludes to the way of preparing a Japanese “snack”. The ingredients are rolled into nori leaves – for this, a special bamboo mat is used for rolling. It is called “makisu”. After that, the roll is cut into the necessary small portions. By the way, you can learn about which side to put a nori sheet on, how to properly prepare sushi and rolls, and to whom these dishes owe their phenomenal global popularity, on Katana’s blog.

Unlike rolls, sushi is prepared by hand, forming oblong lumps of rice and topped with fresh fish slices or small pieces of seafood.

Differences in the principle of preparation

Another significant difference between sushi and rolls!

Sushi is served slightly chilled, immediately after cooking, because the Japanese believe that the temperature of the dish should correspond to the temperature of the human body. Thus, according to the ancient Japanese custom, the appetizer will most fully reveal its taste qualities.

And the roles are not so conservative. Some bake or even serve hot – “tempura”. But most often they are stored in the refrigerator before the presentation. Why? Everything is trivially simple – it is much easier to cut the roll into small pieces.

Differences in the composition of sushi and rolls

When preparing sushi rolls, fillings are completely free, so this dish has many different variations. Fresh fish, seafood, creamy or hard cheese, vegetables, meat or fruit are added to the rolls! But in the classic version, only fresh seafood or fish are provided for sushi.

Now you know how rolls differ from sushi. All that remains is to master the skill of cooking Japanese delicacies and learn everything about the history of sushi!
